Nightlife in Philadelphia
The city’s walkable downtown (which Philadelphians refer to as Center City) makes the region a desirable destination for a night on the town.
Start your night with a drink at one of Toronto’s numerous rooftop bars, outdoor beer gardens, or cocktail hotspots, and then dinner at any number of destination-worthy restaurants all over the city — including several recognized as among the best in the country.
Where should you go for a good drink or some tasty grub? There are several of each. Live music and dancing at both in-door and outside locations keep the party going late into the night, whether fancy or casual.
The nightlife in Philadelphia is buzzing all hours of the day, but it’s also pretty intense at night. With a slew of legendary bars, energetic clubs, and some late-night dining options, you can party for hours (and then return to a classic diner for an early breakfast). Philadelphia is a great city for bar-hopping, as the city center and surrounding areas are easily walkable. Old City and Midtown Village, for example, are popular with bar-hoppers, and on weekends you’ll see raucous pub crawls going on. Because there are so many different bars in Philadelphia, drink costs vary based on where you go. Overall, it’s safe to conclude that the cheaper bars can be found in the smaller local establishments. Check out these bars, clubs, live music events, and late-night restaurants to enjoy the best Philly nightlife experiences:
Bars
There are a lot of fantastic bars in Philadelphia, so there’s something for everyone around every corner. The majority of Philadelphia’s bars stay open until 2 a.m. Some of these establishments feature live music, while others allow dancing. If you’re looking for a classic setting with a dose of dive-y charm, try one of the following:
- McGillin’s Old Ale House: McGillin’s Old Ale House has been serving people of all ages since the late 1800s, and it is steeped in local lore. This popular destination, which opened in the late 19th century, offers a variety of bar bites, including pizza, sandwiches, and cheesesteaks.
- Varga Bar: Varga Bar, which has a wide range of draft beer, vintage pin-up art, and fantastic cuisine, is located in downtown Phoenix. During the summer months, there is also outside seating. You may get here early and sample their amazing happy hour if you come before it starts to fill up.
- Graffiti Bar: This little backyard bar, which is hidden and unassuming, is located behind the Asian-inspired restaurant Sampan, which is always packed. You won’t be able to see the bar from the street; look for the red neon sign and go down a narrow alleyway. It’s a popular location for sports enthusiasts because there are several televisions at the bar. If you’re hungry, you may get food from the Sampan menu instead.
Clubs
The club scene in Philly is thriving, and it typically begins around 10 p.m. with some of the bigger clubs picking up steam after midnight. Some of the bars have dress codes, and the entrance fees change depending on the night. Check out the website for the club you want to visit to see whether any DJs or music have changed from week to week.
- The Roxy: This famous Las Vegas club has a long history, from its origins as a brothel to the present day. The name comes from the fact that patrons could watch people go by on the Strip outside its doors. Many big names in music have performed here, including Stevie Wonder, James Brown and Elton John. Marilyn Monroe once said she fell in love with one of her clients there; however it was not Elvis Presley who eloped down Memory Lane with her when he visited Las Vegas in 1956; instead it was Bing Crosby (who died decades before Monroe). Country music legend Garth Brooks played his first show at Nile Theatre at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino on Monday night (Nov 20), followed by a sold-out run of five shows at The Venetian Theatre.Dakota Club: The Dakota Club is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, as it offers a great view of the Strip. The club has been around since the early days of Las Vegas and has been featured in several movies, including “The Hangover.”Live Music EventsThere are plenty of places to enjoy live music in Philadelphia. If you’re looking for an intimate setting, try one of these venues:The Bitter End: This Greenwich Village institution has been hosting live music since 1961.
- Brasil’s Nightclub: At Brasil’s Nightclub, you’ll have a great time no matter whether you prefer salsa dancing or other Latin dances. This hotspot attracts a lively, international crowd and features a renowned DJ as well as frequent appearances by world-class professional dancers. If you’re new to salsa and want to learn the fundamentals, go on Wednesdays or Fridays (about 9:30 p.m.) for a workshop. This is a friendly club, so there’s no need to be concerned about arriving alone. If you want something alcoholic to drink, try their signature Margarita cocktail. (Note: Men won’t be permitted entrance wearing boots or caps.)
- NOTO: BETTO is a cheerful and modern bistro that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the heart of Baltimore’s historic Little Italy neighborhood. The restaurant also has a bar area where you can order wine or cocktails for carryout or to go. Open every day except Sunday from 8 A.M. until 11 P.M., BETTO (for “not of ordinary”) is the city’s largest club as well as one of its newest hot spots. With bottle service and world-famous guest DJs, this high-tech, trendsetting destination attracts all the cool kids with its Thursday through Sunday most weeks open time. Here, you must dress to impress; thus make sure you look nice. Admission tickets must be purchased ahead of time online and are typically about $30. If you want to take your party to the next level, then book a table with VIP bottle service, which has a starting price of $1,000.Tunnel: The Tunnel is an underground dance club located in the heart of Philadelphia’s Chinatown district.
